The Citizenship and Immigration Department has announced recently that 226,500 new immigrants landed in Canada in the 2000 calendar year. This number exceeds the target of 200-225,000 which was set by the government for the same period.
This is the first time in seven years that the Department has either met or exceeded this target
“The first step to that is achieving the levels that you set each year. So this is a very important first step,” Elinor Caplan, the current Minister responsible for immigration, said.
“This year is the first year that we’ve achieved the levels in several years. . . . but our goal is to move toward one per cent, ensuring that all regions of the country benefit.”
During interviews on the same subject, the Minister announced that further revisions are ongoing in anticipation of the implementation of the new Regulations which have been in discussion.
