TD Bank Group and Canadian education technology company ApplyBoard have collaborated to help new international students from China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal, and Vietnam meet eligibility requirements for a Canadian study permit under the Government of Canada's Student Direct Stream (SDS) program.

International students looking to study in Canada can benefit from ApplyBoard’s secure and private technology document verification tool to meet Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) standards.

How can newcomers benefit from this?

TD and ApplyBoard’s collaboration add to simplified services from TD to help international students start their journey to Canada with ease, speed, and confidence.

International students looking to speed up their study permit processing time under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program are required to show IRCC that they have an equivalent amount of money in International Student GIC to meet IRCC’s minimum requirements. As of January 1st, 2024, IRCC increased this monetary amount to $20,635 CAD.

The SDS is an expedited stream for study permit applicants from certain eligible countries. Applicants can receive a decision on their study permit in as little as two weeks (timeline is defined by IRCC). The TD International Student GIC program provides GICs to newcomers with no application fee that begin accruing interest even before students arrive in Canada.

Now when newcomers use the TD International Student GIC program to provide proof of funds, they will also be able to use ApplyBoard’s standalone verification platform, ApplyProof, to help strengthen study permit applications.

ApplyProof is a verification solution that allows immigration officials, admissions officers, and other relevant parties to access original supporting documents for student admissions and immigration applications. The platform aims to provide centralized, streamlined verification of documents to help decrease wait times and build trust in legitimate documents provided.

Due to the fact that decision making on study permit applications is open to the reviewing officer’s discretion, making sure the correct documents are provided and verified can be hugely important to successfully applying.

Other benefits

TD offers a variety of services tailored to international students' need. For example, the TD International Student GIC program also provides students with a TD Student Chequing account with no monthly plan fee (until 23 years old or with proof of enrolment in full-time post-secondary education), unlimited transactions, and more.

In addition, students may opt for the International Student Banking Package, which gives newcomers up to $850 CAD in value when you start by opening a new TD Student Chequing Account, are approved for a TD Rewards Visa* Card, and open an eligible Savings Account. Offer inclusive of a $50 Amazon.ca gift card when you bundle all three products together. Conditions apply.

In addition, when opening an account with TD, students can benefit from:

  • Credit cards (subject to approval) without prior credit history to help newcomers build a Canadian credit score, which is crucial for mortgages, leases, loans, and insurance policies in Canada;
  • Accessible banking with longer branch hours, 80+ diverse language service options, and comprehensive online and phone supports;
  • Continued support and advice with an extensive team of experts to help with everything from day-to-day expenses to long-term financial planning, and investments;
  • Use Interac e-Transfer® to send and request money within Canada for free. Send money conveniently and securely to over 200 countries with TD Global TransferTM and get your transfer fees rebated for up to 12 months when you send money from your TD Student Chequing Account when you enroll into the International Student Banking Package; and
  • Other benefits afforded to TD customers in Canada.
