How do I prepare for virtual interviews with Canadian employers?

Today, many job interviews will be virtual, using a video conferencing application along with a camera and microphone.

There are several steps you can take to prepare:

  • Research the company: If you put in the extra effort to learn everything you can about the company prior to the interview, you can stand out from the other candidates. Don’t just spend 5 minutes reading their website and think that you’ve “done your research.” Learn everything that you can.
  • Prepare your wardrobe: Even for a virtual interview, it’s important to dress appropriately. Ensure that you have a professional outfit suitable for your role in your industry. For a virtual interview, you’ll want to use solid colours and avoid stripes or patterns, which can appear strange on camera and be distracting.
  • Set up your space: Ensure that you have an appropriate space for the interview where you can be comfortable and can set up your screen, camera, and microphone. You will also want to pay attention to the background in your space. If possible, set yourself up in a space with a clean and tidy background—imagine that it’s a well-put-together home office. Avoid clutter and avoid any subject matter that could be controversial (e.g., political posters). If you don’t have a clean and tidy physical background available, consider using a professional-looking virtual background.
  • Test the technology: To minimize the risk of technical issues during your interview, test as much as possible in advance—the video conferencing software that you will be using, your internet connection, your device, your camera, your speakers/headphones, and your microphone. Should you encounter technical issues, stay calm and focus on troubleshooting and solving the problem with the interviewer—most interviewers will be understanding.

Samsung Galaxy laptops and tablets, paired with advanced camera technology or using built-in webcams, ensure you present yourself professionally during virtual interviews. With features like Samsung DeX**, you can even use your phone to set up a seamless, desktop-like interview environment.

What tools can help me work remotely effectively?

In the age of remote work, your devices, and how you set them in your space, will be the most important factors for productivity.

Samsung offers a variety of laptops and tablets which make excellent devices on which to perform virtual work. You can also use Samsung DeX to gain laptop-like functionality from any Samsung Galaxy device, such as your phone or tablet—this is great for delivering presentations or working in coffee shops.

Ensure that you have a comfortable place to sit and/or stand while working. Remember that changing positions frequently throughout the day is better than staying in any one position.

Set up your desktop, laptop, or tablet, and consider using at least one additional monitors. Being able to have multiple screens open will save you from having to tab back and forth between applications or windows and make you more productive in many roles.

Samsung’s range of monitors can expand your digital workspace, and some employers will purchase them on your behalf or will repay you a portion of the cost.

If you’re using a laptop, consider taking advantage of Samsung’s keyboards and mice to set up peripherals at your workstation so you can work in the most ergonomic positions possible.

In the current age of remote work, we’re always connected personally and professionally, so you’ll want to sync your Galaxy devices for seamless transitions between work and personal tasks.

How can I organize my job search and applications using technology?

You may find it tough to get a job in Canada. The Canadian job market is competitive, and many jobs are filled through referrals. That said, the right strategy and technology can support your job search and may help in obtaining a job.

Using technology effectively can make your job search more efficient and productive.

Use a spreadsheet on your Samsung laptop or tablet to keep track of which companies and positions you have applied to, and which professional contacts you have made at each company.

You can use Samsung notes to track your applications and the research you’ve done on each company, and Samsung Pass to securely store credentials across all your devices—phone, desktop/laptop, and tablet—to avoid having to manage the different login information you need for applying for jobs through employers’ online portals.
