Q & A: Delays After Interview

CIC News
Published: February 1, 2003

Q. Following the completion of my selection interview, I have not received any new information. What are the possible reasons for delays?

Answer: It can take several months for the immigration officer to make a review of the application after the selection Interview. Average times vary from each processing post and can depend on a number of factors such as:

1. Were additional documents requested at the time of the interview; if so, review of the file will not be completed until documents requested are submitted and verified by the immigration officer;

2. were the background checks cleared; background checks must be completed for every applicant over the age of 18 and can take anywhere between 8-12 months for completion. Most processing posts begin the background checks only after the applicant has successfully passed their Selection Interview

3. Was the medical requirement cleared; requests for additional medical information or exams causes delays with the medical clearance. CIC usually advises within 12 weeks from the date of the medical exam if additional information/exam is required. If after 12 weeks you are not contacted, then you can safely assume that the medical requirement has been cleared.
