Labour Force Survey, January 1999
Labour Force Survey January 2000 Employment rose by an estimated 44,000 in January, continuing the strong growth of the past three years. Job gains were matched by an increase in the number of people participating in the labour market, leaving the unemployment rate unchanged from December at 6.8%, the lowest since April 1976.
Full-time employment continued to grow in January, bringing year-over-year gains to 442,000 (+3.8%). While part-time employment also increased, losses through most of 1999 left part-time employment down 39,000 (-1.4%) over the preceding 12 months.
The strong labour market performance is also reflected in a 0.3% increase in the number of hours worked in January.
